What is a Gastric Band?
A Gastric Band is a small inflatable band that fits around the top of the stomach. It is usually fitted by keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery. A Gastric Band restricts food intake and helps to control hunger. When the band is inflated it limits the stomach’s size, reducing the capacity to intake food and increasing the feeling of fullness. The combination of these two effects results in significant weight loss. The Gastric Band is safe, effective, well tolerated and adjustable.
What is a Gastric Band adjustment?
A gastric band adjustment is carried out in an outpatient clinic setting. It is a quick procedure but must be performed by a doctor who is specially trained to adjust gastric bands. Adding or removing fluid from the band makes adjustments. This is done by access to a small port, which is located just under your skin.
Dr James Cavanagh is a specialist in Gastric Band Adjustment. He currently provides post-operative care for patients who have had a Gastric Band put in place. He has become an expert in this field by working alongside a team of specialists in The Imperial Weight Centre, at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington. This is part of the Academic Health Science Centre at Imperial College London, a world leader in healthcare and medical research.
What Service Can I expect?
Dr Cavanagh offers counselling and support as well as band adjustments for patients who have taken the decision to control their weight with the help of a Gastric Band. He works along side dieticians and psychiatrist who specialise in this field and is part of a network of health care professionals who are leading the way in developing what is a relatively new and promising area of health care.
Surgery is not the only option for weight loss. Dr Cavanagh will see you for a pre-operative appointment, to help you to decide if a Gastric Band is right for you. He will consider your situation including; age, sex, body mass index (a calculation of your weight in relation to height), and other existing health problems. He will discuss your options including your suitability for having a Gastric Band fitted. If needed he can refer you his associated surgeons, who are leading the field in London for Bariatric (weight-loss) Surgery.
The Gastric Band is usually filled for the first time six weeks after surgery. The purpose is to greatly restrict the stomach's capacity for food. You must be prepared to adopt a very different eating pattern. Some people find this adjustment to their eating habits hard to make. You may wish a slight reduction to the band in this early post-operative period and this can be done in our clinic.
Typically, you will need to come for a review of the Gastric Band every 6 months. There are also times of life where you may wish to be more or less restrictive about what you can eat. You can come for Gastric Band Adjustments to the clinic, more often than 6 monthly, when you wish to.
